LOT OF TWO ANCIENT COOKBOOKS 1. MODERN COOKING AND THE TABLE Librairie Larousse, Paris. No date, circa 1920. 490 pages. Grand manual of bourgeois cuisine written by a collective led by Doctor Lambling, with the participation of Parisian restaurateurs, including the owner of the Foyot restaurants and the Café de Paris, and the head chef of Pavillon d'Armenonville. The title announces 603 engravings, including 135 reproductions of photographs, and 4 maps. The book covers everything: selection and storage of foods, kitchenware, fish, meats, poultry, game, vegetables, sauces, patisserie, charcuterie and preserves, table service and cellar. Beautiful wood-engraving plates, notably the series of vegetables. Publisher's binding in natural cloth, Art Nouveau green foliage decoration on the front cover and spine. Red edges. Bookmark preserved. Visible defects: - Inner hinge cracked at the top, sewing thread visible at the bottom of the title page. - Soiled cloth, pale stains scattered, especially on the lower plate. - Spine slightly toned. - Corners and edges rubbed, one corner dulled. - Bookmark frayed. - Paper slightly browned with some light foxing. 2. ILLUSTRATED MODERN COOKING Librairie Aristide Quillet, Paris, 1948. Complete manual of cooking written by a gathering of professionals, organized by sections: soups, fish, meats, poultry, vegetables, desserts. Recipes in tight columns, many illustrations in the text. Very nice publisher's binding in dark green calico, adorned with a large Art Deco relief depicting a kitchen range surrounded by vegetables and fruits. Gilt title on the front and on the spine. Visible defects: - The body of the work is detaching from the spine at the foot: inner hinge opened for a few centimeters, thread visible. The book remains usable but should be handled with care. - Small brown stain and light rubbing at the head. - Some light specks on the edges. - Binding otherwise very fresh, design and gilding clear. Interior clean. Lot sold as described and photographed. All defects are noted above and visible in the photographs. Careful shipping with reinforced packaging, with tracking number.
