Besongne / London [Rouen] / 1748 Description: This edition contains an adaptation of John Milton's "Paradise Lost" in six books. The work was praised in its time by the famous thinkers Voltaire and Fontenelle and is dedicated to the Academy of Rouen. The beautifully illustrated work includes a frontispiece and two recurring final vignettes after designs by Jean-Baptiste Marie Pierre. In addition there is a title vignette by Durand and six half-page headpieces by Hubert-François Gravelot. All illustrations were copper-engraved by Louise de Montigny. Condition: The fine binding somewhat rubbed and lightly bumped. Paper clean, slightly browned, minimally foxed. A few pages at the upper edge very faintly damp-stained. Very good copy of the sought title.
