Dunkirk, New York. 1875 $20 Fr. 435. Merchants NB. Charter #2619. PCGS Currency Fine 12. A tough type and denomination for any bank in the United States. Bidders are nonetheless presented here with a handsome, but well-circulated Series of 1875 $20 National Bank Note issued by the Merchants National Bank of Dunkirk (Charter# 2619) between 1882 and 1892. Here bidders are not only met with a clear and detailed back design anchored by an engraved reproduction of John Gadsby Chapman's Baptism of Pocahontas, but also exquisite, penned signatures. These signatures which are attributable to Cashier John H. Lascelles and (Vice) President Charles DeKalb Murray are arguably the proverbial cherry, and this is no doubt the perfect piece for the type-focused collector looking for an attractive example of this prohibitively scarce design. Estimate: $1,250 - $1,750.
