For sale is this detailed Indian bronze group of the Hindu goddess Durga as Mahishasuramardini, the conqueror of the buffalo demon Mahishasura. The figure comes from an inherited collection of Asian art and decorative objects. Durga is depicted in a dynamic, multi-armed representation. Her numerous arms hold various weapons and attributes. Particularly noticeable is the long, diagonally running weapon through the composition as well as other attributes in the raised hands. In the lower area there is the characteristic combat scene with Mahishasura, the buffalo demon. Also integrated is Durga's mount, the lion. This combination of Durga, lion and Mahishasura belongs to the classic depictions of the goddess as Mahishasuramardini – “Conqueror of the Buffalo Demon”. The goddess wears an elaborately designed headdress, jewelry elements, and a finely textured garment. Behind her head rises a large ornate aureole that encompasses the multi-armed figure. The entire group stands on a richly decorated, semi-oval plinth with an surrounding relief border. Dimensions & weight: Height approx. 18 cm, Width approx. 14 cm, Depth approx. 6 cm, Weight approx. 942 g. Material: Bronze. Representation: Durga Mahishasuramardini with Mahishasura and lion. Origin: India. Particularly interesting is the dotted provenance mark “INDIA” on the back of the plinth, which indicates the bronze’s Indian origin. The bronze has a warm brown-bronze surface with dark patina in the recesses. In the raised areas, lighter metal tones appear due to rubbing. Condition is used with age- and use-related traces. Patina, oxidation and discoloration traces, rubbing, scratches, deposits as well as casting and surface irregularities are visible. On the numerous delicate arms, weapons and openings there may be minor irregularities or missing parts. The underside of the plinth is open and shows corresponding deposits and oxidation traces. No exact dating has been made; the figure is therefore not offered as “antique”. The photos are part of the condition description.
