Dutch East Indies

It concerns a locally cast piece and NOT an original specimen of Japanese strip copper with flattened ends. The authentic Halve Larijnen were soon falsified and were therefore demonetized. Nearly all the coinage came back, but of course the counterfeits did not. Most counterfeit discoveries nowadays concern modern 20th-century, easily recognizable imitations; this contemporary piece, however, does have collector value. Front: 4% ST - VOC monogram with C above Reverse: 4% ST - VOC monogram with C above Material: Copper - Cu 99.7% (conform to XRF measurement) Weight: 41.87 grams Reference: cf. Scholten 1295c / cf. KM 32 Quality: XF Extra info Because of the war threat from the English, all silver money disappeared from circulation. Reason for the VOC board on Ceylon to manufacture from the available Japanese strip copper Halve Larijnen. The silver larijn traded at a rate of 9/2 stuiver, hence the somewhat odd denomination of 4% stuiver. The bars of Japanese copper were longer than needed for a halve larijn, so they were cut into pieces (as with the 'bonken' that has happened) and given a stamped end. Authentic specimens will then, at least on one end, show a cut termination.
