Dutch school (XIX) - Escena de género

Oil on panel “Genre Scene,” Dutch School, 19th century – Netherlands Technique on support: Oil on panel Title of the work: “Genre Scene” School: Dutch School Period: 19th century Country of origin: Netherlands Good condition for its age and use Total dimensions: 50 x 68 x 6 cm. Dimensions without frame: 28 x 45 cm. Exceptional oil on panel of Dutch origin with a genre scene theme, 19th century, following the style and characteristics of the well-known Dutch Golden Age genre painting. It depicts a lively interior scene with common people around a table, a boy and a small dog at their feet. The figures wear broad-brimmed hats, doublets, lace collars, and the distinctive traditional coifs and attire of women. It captures a mundane, spontaneous moment, full of realism with no heroic or religious idealization. As usual, it is a dark scene, lit by a single central spotlight that barely reveals the background elements, the home walls. Regarding the color palette, earth tones, ochres, browns and blacks predominate, strategically punctuated by the red of the clothing and the white of the textiles and the dog. It features a rich carved and gilded wooden frame ornamented with floral motifs and cartouche shapes. Dutch Golden Age painting Dutch Golden Age painting, or Dutch Baroque painting, developed during a period of Dutch history spanning the 17th century, during and after the Eighty Years' War (1568-1648) for independence. The United Provinces were the most prosperous nation in Europe, leading trade, science, and the arts. Dutch art had to reinvent itself completely after the abrupt break with Catholic cultural traditions and the old monarchy. The art of this period shows many characteristics of European Baroque but largely lacks idealization. A striking feature of the era, compared with earlier European painting, was the scarcity of religious painting. History painting and portraits existed, but the period is more notable for a wide variety of other genres, subdivided into numerous specialized categories, such as scenes of peasant life, landscapes, townscapes, or those with animals, seascapes, flowers, and still lifes. 17th-century Dutch people greatly influenced the overall development of these genres. The development and enormous popularity of genre painting is the most distinctive feature of Dutch painting of the time. Often it is a solitary figure, other times large groups depicted to illustrate a social event. Within this genre, categories were distinguished: single figures, peasant families, tavern scenes, with people enjoying music and drinks, women working in their homes, city or village festivities, markets, stables with horses or farm animals… Each class had a specific Dutch term, as there was no generic term that could designate all these “genre scenes.” These works reflected the growing prosperity of Dutch society. The environments became progressively more comfortable, opulent, and carefully represented as the century advanced. The shipment of the product will be paid by the buyer according to the dimensions, weight, and destination. Shipping costs include professional custom packaging and personalized shipping, with tracking number and guarantee. The frame protecting the artwork is offered as a gift, but it has intrinsic value. It is provided at no additional cost so that when your artwork arrives at your home or destination it can be displayed immediately. Any damage to the frame itself, as long as it does not affect the integrity of the artwork, cannot be accepted as a valid reason to file a claim or request a cancellation. The buyer will be responsible for paying import duties and related taxes in the destination country, if any. Please note the seller’s disclaimer regarding possible customs charges, as they are charged in the destination country and the amount to be paid is determined by that country’s customs. If an export license is required, the costs are borne by the buyer. The cost depends progressively on the value of the work to be exported.
