Dutch school (XVII) - Portrait of a Young Nobleman, bust-length

Dutch School, 17th Century Portrait of Philip William, Prince of Orange Oil on oak panel, 24 x 19 cm (without frame). In a complimentary fruitwood frame. Estimated price: €3,500 to €5,500. This fine 17th-century cabinet portrait depicts Philip William, Prince of Orange (1554–1618), the eldest son of William the Silent. Executed in oil on a compact 24 x 19 cm oak panel, the work aligns with the precise painting style of the Dutch Golden Age and follows the famous courtly iconography of Michiel Jansz. van Mierevelt. The portrait stands as a clear testament to the painter's technical skill. With controlled virtuosity, the artist captures the exact textile contrast between the starched, geometric folds of the lace ruff and the heavy, opulent texture of the garment. The doublet is a masterclass in fine miniature painting, where the intricate floral motifs embroidered with gold thread have been meticulously detailed to catch a subtle play of light. Beyond this outward display of status, the artist endows the Prince with a quiet, psychological depth, his calm gaze conveying a composed, dignified authority. What elevates this particular piece is its rich material history. The reverse of the wooden panel reads like a documentation for collectors: it features an antique French archival label as well as the remnants of a red wax seal—evidence of its provenance in significant historic private collections or an official customs and export clearance. The painting is housed in a beautifully grained, contemporary fruitwood frame that perfectly complements the warm, historic tones of the artwork. An identical composition, executed on copper, is preserved in the permanent collection of the Mauritshuis in The Hague. This excellently preserved panel offers an intimate, museum-quality connection to the founding line of the House of Orange-Nassau.
