E. Gridel; illustrations d'après Aimé Morot - Souvenirs d'un louvetier - 1891

Original edition of a great classic of French hunting literature: Souvenirs d'un louvetier. Chasses des Vosges, written and illustrated by Joseph Émile Gridel (1839-1901). Published in Paris by the prestigious Librairie Firmin Didot et Cie in 1891, this octavo-format book gathers captivating accounts of hunts (boars, wolves, capercaillies, rock partridges, hazel grouse, wild cats) drawn from notes taken on the fly by the author in the Vosges massif. The work comprises 31 wood engravings after the author’s original drawings (the cover title or catalog occasionally lists “30 illustrations”). Many of them are printed as plates outside the text. Referenced in the famous cynégétique Thiébaud catalog under number 477. A work highly sought after by hunting enthusiasts (venery and wolf-hunting) and by collectors of regional books on Alsace Lorraine and the Vosges. Interior freshness and absence of foxing, as well as the binding’s wear-free condition and its simplicity (clearly evident in the photo).
