E.H. Wiesner (XIX) - Torrente Alpino nella Gola Boschiva al Chiaro di Luna

E. H. Wiesner (Attributed) – "Torrente Alpino nella Gola Boschiva al Chiaro di Luna" – Oil on Canvas – Late 19th / Early 20th Century I present to you a painterly work of notable charm and dramatic impact, superb testimony of Central European Natural Romanticism flourishing around the turn of the 19th to the 20th century (roughly 1890–1920). The painting captures the pure essence of Alpine landscape painting in the Austro-German sphere, a current that has chosen untouched, wild nature as a mirror of the human soul. The composition describes a hard-to-reach mountain gorge, where the true protagonist is the dramatic contrast of the elements: the ancient rock, the dense forest, and the disruptive force of the water. The lyrical center lies in the extraordinary handling of nocturnal light: a veiled moon (or a pale sun filtering through storm clouds) tears through the atmospheric veil, generating a cold overhead light that makes the river rapids gleam, while the dense understory remains enveloped in mystery and gloom. It is an aesthetic celebration of the Romantic concept of the “Sublime,” suspended between wonder and reverential awe before the grandeur of nature. The work stands out for a rich and vibrant execution technique: the artist uses a thick, impasto application, dense and richly tactile. The strokes of white lead and the gray-blue hues of the foaming water are laid on thick, imparting three-dimensionality and physical dynamism to the current. Spatiality is orchestrated on a diagonal that guides the viewer’s eye from the impetuous foreground to the background. On the right, a solemn barrier of dark conifers rises, recalling the symbolic tradition of the sacred forest; on the left, the rocky walls slope down to reveal, in the distance, the monumental, misty silhouettes of the great peaks. The painting bears the autograph signature in the lower left corner: "E. H. Wiesner." The mark is applied with a reddish-orange pigment in a fluid stroke, underscored by a slanted underline that lengthens the last letter of the surname. The artist’s style shows deep affinities with the masters of the Munich and Vienna Schools, famous for uniting almost photographic descriptive precision with a powerful atmospheric rendering. Sheet: Artist: E. H. Wiesner, Signed on the front Title of the Work: Torrente alpino nella gola boschiva al chiaro di luna. Era: Late 19th – Early 20th Century (circa 1890–1920). Technique: Oil on canvas (thick, impasto application). School: Naturalistic Romanticism / Central European Landscape Painting. Frame: Contemporary and original to the period, molded and gold-leaf with floral and acanthus leaf reliefs. The work is presented in good conservation condition and over time has been repainted and undergone minor repairs (as per photos). The canvas measures about 69 x 55 cm. With frame about 80 x 67.5 cm. The frame visible in the photo is included as a courtesy, is being offered free of charge and, even though it has value, does not constitute part of the work’s value in the purchase as it is a gift, thus not an integral part of the artwork. Any frame damage will not be a valid ground for complaints or order cancellations. The painting surface is solid, stable, and retains extraordinary brilliance at light points. It bears its period patina, attesting to the piece’s historicity and harmonizing the warm earth tones with the deep greens of the vegetation. There are no signs of color loss or invasive recent restorations, though some non-invasive work may have been performed. The painting is set in its imposing original monumental frame. The rich gold leaf and the raised ornamental friezes (acanthus leaf motifs) are in excellent preserve condition, maintaining the era’s luster. The frame is supplied with the painting, making it ready to hang and display, and it does not affect the value of the work. I guarantee logistics commensurate with the value and weight of the piece: The painting will be isolated with protective films, wrapped in bubble wrap and other packing materials, then placed in cardboard for shipment. Shipping is entrusted exclusively to internationally renowned express couriers (DHL/UPS/FedEx) with a tracking code provided immediately after dispatch. The lot travels with full insurance coverage for the total adjudicated value, ensuring maximum peace of mind for the buyer.
