E. Hoffer - Art Deco - Brass - 1920-1930 - Holy water bowls, set of 2

Set of 2 Art Deco Holy-water font relyers – E. Hoffer – Model No. 9 & No. 10 – c. 1920-1930 Object description: An exceptional and rare, consecutive set of two antique Art Deco Holy-water font receivers (bénitiers), designed and signed by the well-known European artist/designer E. Hoffer. This set was crafted in the heyday of the Art Deco period (circa 1920–1930) and showcases the characteristic sharp, geometric formal language of the time. The set consists of two consecutive models from the same series, which is unique for collectors: 1. Model No. 9 (Diamond Shape): Geometrically diamond-shaped model with a detailed relief of the Lamentation weapons (Arma Christi), including the empty cross with the crown of thorns, the shroud, the spear and the sponge on a reed stalk. Finished with typical Art Deco fan-shaped lines at the bottom. The back is marked with the foundry signature 'E. Hoffer' and model designation 'N. 9'. 2. Model No. 10 (Cross Shape): Beautifully stylized Latin cross featuring a powerful relief of the Holy Face (Christ with crown of thorns). The back is clearly marked with the foundry signature 'E. Hoffer' and model designation 'N. 10'. Condition and authenticity: Both objects are in excellent, original vintage condition with a beautiful, age-warmed patina. Very rare and noteworthy is that both vessels still contain the original red protective enamel (lead glaze) on the inside. This coating was originally applied to protect the metal from the intrusion of the (salty) Holy water and has been beautifully preserved here.
