Background Information: This decorated bronze fitting is attributed to the Early Medieval period and identified as a belt hook or fastening element. It features a distinctive asymmetrical form, with a rounded terminal decorated with six ring-and-dot motifs, a tapering central section and an openwork terminal with two smaller projections. Engraved parallel lines provide additional ornamentation. Belt fittings formed an important part of Early Medieval dress, serving both practical and decorative purposes. Belts were worn by men and women to secure clothing and carry personal equipment, including knives, pouches and other everyday necessities. Elaborately decorated fittings could also reflect personal taste, regional traditions and social identity. The ring-and-dot motif was a widespread decorative feature in European metalworking, occurring on jewellery, dress accessories and everyday objects from the Roman period into the Middle Ages. Such ornamentation was produced using simple punches and engraving tools, demonstrating the established craftsmanship of Early Medieval metalworkers. Bronze belt fittings were manufactured in workshops across different regions of Europe, including the Frankish and Anglo-Saxon cultural spheres. Their forms and decorative traditions developed through regional craftsmanship, cultural exchange and established networks of trade and communication.
