Olot School — First half of the 20th century Paysage de la Garrotxa Oil on canvas. Framed measurements: 83 × 71 cm. Interesting oil on canvas belonging to the Olot landscape tradition, executed during the first half of the 20th century. The work falls within the continuation of one of the fundamental currents of Catalan landscape painting, developed around Olot and the landscapes of La Garrotxa. The so-called School of Olot emerged during the second half of the 19th century around figures such as Joaquim Vayreda, Marià Vayreda and Josep Berga i Boix. Its importance lies in having transferred to the Catalan sphere certain approaches from French Barbizon landscape painting, granting direct observation of nature, light and atmospheric variations an essential role. The Museu de la Garrotxa currently conserves one of the principal conjuntos for studying this tradition. The present painting belongs to the continuity of this tradition during the early decades of the 20th century, more so than to the foundational, nineteenth-century generation. In the two decades leading up to the Civil War, artists such as Melcior Domenge, Enric Galwey and Iu Pascual had a prominent presence in the Olot artistic circle; this consolidation of landscape painting even facilitated the creation of the Escola Superior de Paisatge de Olot in 1934. The composition presents a rural landscape of markedly Catalan character, structured around a rocky path that starts in the foreground and leads the eye toward a farmhouse located in a slightly elevated position. The rural architecture, sober and perfectly integrated into its surroundings, acts as a reference point in the composition. On the left, a group of tall, bare-trunked trees establishes a strong vertical that contrasts with the gentle lines of the distant mountains. A small female figure dressed in dark clothing, accompanied by another figure or a small element, introduces human scale and provides the scene with a discreet folkloric component. One of the most attractive aspects of the painting is precisely the integration between landscape and rural life. The figure does not dominate the composition; she appears subordinated to nature, a device deeply rooted in the Olot tradition. In the early formulations of the School of Olot, the landscape became the true protagonist, although the presence of small human figures continued to add narrative content to many compositions. The execution combines naturalistic observation with a noticeably freer brushwork. The path is built with impasto touches of whites, ochres, earth tones and grays, while the vegetation presents a rich range of deep greens, browns, and reddish hues. The brushwork becomes particularly perceptible on stones, shrubs and foreground ground. Against this material wealth, the distant mountains are resolved with broader masses of blues and blue-green, achieving a convincing sense of atmospheric distance. Equally characteristic is the importance given to the sky, occupying a considerable part of the composition. Its warm, yellowish and slightly golden tone lends the whole scene a serene and enveloping atmosphere, deliberately contrasting with the cool blues of the mountains. The painting transmits precisely some of the values traditionally associated with Olot landscape painting: serenity, balance, harmony and a recognizable but idealized vision of rural life. The Catalan Institute of Sciences and Arts’ Diccionari d'Artistes Catalans, Valencians i Balears notes these concepts of peace, balance and harmony as essential elements of the landscape conception developed by Berga and the Vayredas. It should be noted that current historiography uses the term “School of Olot” with some caution: the historical core properly belongs mainly to the 19th century, while during the 20th there are later generations that continued, reinterpreted or distanced themselves from that tradition. Therefore, for this painting I consider it more accurate to catalog it as “School of Olot / Olot landscape tradition, first half of the 20th century.” The Museu de la Garrotxa itself currently distinguishes between the foundational school and the different later generations. The work bears a signature in the lower right corner, though its reading does not presently allow secure identification of the artist. For this reason it is prudently cataloged within the Olot landscape tradition. Total measurements with frame: 83 × 71 cm. The work is presented framed. The condition of preservation can be seen in detail in the photographs, which form an integral part of the description. The frame is included gratis as a courtesy, not considered part of the work nor assigned any commercial value. Therefore, any damage that may affect the frame during transport cannot be grounds for a claim. The work will be carefully packed to ensure maximum protection during transport.
