Saint Mary Magdalene in ecstasy, supported by two angels Old master print from the Cabinet of Drawings of the Louvre Museum Large Napoleonic III period frame (19th century) --- DESCRIPTION OF THE WORK : Remarkable and poignant religious composition depicting Saint Mary Magdalene in mystical ecstasy (or abandoned to the pilgrimage of Sainte-Baume), delicately supported by two angels with compassionate faces. Executed after a master drawing of the French School of the 17th century (in the academic and baroque taste of artists such as Charles Le Brun or Le Dominiquin), this work stands out for the remarkable handling of drapery, the finesse of modeling, and the subtle treatment of chiaroscuro. INSTITUTIONAL MARKS & PROVENANCE : This high-quality sheet is an art print / facsimile of a study from the 19th century, directly from the French national collections. It bears along the border several official stamps: • The “RF” stamp (République Française). • The “MN” stamp (Musées Nationaux / Musée du Louvre), attesting to the origin of the matrix preserved in the Louvre’s Cabinet of Drawings. • A third mark / collector or reserve stamp on the lower border of the sheet. FRAMING & PERIOD PRESENTATION : The work is heightened by its exceptional Napoleonic III period frame (Second Empire / early Third Republic, circa 1870-1880): • Materials: Wood and stucco with rich original gilding, adorned with fine mouldings in classical motifs (heart-shaped rosettes and acanthus leaves). • “In-box” mount under glass: Modern and refined presentation in a floating mount, allowing the original paper cuts and edges to show. • Original assembly: The back in wood is traditionally joined with half-lath joints using old dowels and nails preserved. TECHNICAL CHARACTERISTICS : • Technique: Contemporary art print on tinted laid paper. • Frame dimensions: 77 cm × 68 cm • Sheet dimensions (sight): about 42 cm × 32 cm • Weight: substantial (over 5 kg) CONDITION REPORT : • Artwork: Good overall condition for its age, very beautiful natural patina of the paper. • Frame: Magnificent original gilding with a charming patina of wear. • Noted: A slight chip/crack is present on the edge of the original glass, discreet along the border at a join point. This minor defect does not affect the sheet or the overall aesthetics of the piece. Piece with great decorative and historical presence. Very careful, reinforced, and secure shipping with international tracking.
