École Espagnole (c. 1820) - Notre-Dame, la Bonne Bergère des Âmes

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. - The mystical origin of the devotion to the Divine Pastora is inextricably linked to the fervor of the Capuchin friars and to a heavenly vision that occurred in Seville in the early eighteenth century, when fray Isidoro de Sevilla, inspired by mystical visions and by the desire to propagate love for the Virgin under this endearing title, conceived the iconography that would define its cult. Tradition recounts that, after a revelation, the monk commissioned the sculptor Francisco Antonio Ruiz Gijón to carve the first image of the Virgin dressed in pastoral jacket, straw hat and the mantle blue laid over her pink tunic, bearing the staff and crowned with flowers, while around her the meek sheep that symbolize the human flock graze. This convent-born and humble birth soon transcended the temple walls to take root with unusual force in the popular soul, becoming the banner of Andalusian and peninsular devotion. In its incomprehensible and sublime theological dimension, the metaphor of Mary as shepherdess of souls could only germinate fully within Spanish devotion, where Counter-Reformation mysticism fused doctrinal depth with the tender and stark earthly proximity. To elevate the figure of the shepherd —the Evangelical archetype par excellence— to the Marian dignity meant conceiving the Mother of God not only as celestial queen, but as a daily guide, watchful and suffering, who traverses the world’s cliffs to rescue the wayward sheep, sheltering it under the protection of her staff and her fur mantle. In this early 19th-century painting, imbued with a Romantic and popular patina, the metaphor takes on an undeniable painted flesh: the Virgin sits in the heart of a misty, rugged landscape, surrounded by lambs that gaze at her with devout docility, embodying the definitive triumph of a holy tenderness that protects and leads humanity toward the eternal meadows. - Image dimensions without frame: 61 x 82 cm / 70 x 89 cm with exclusive custom frame.
