Their dark lines outline the eyes and considerably reinforce the expression of the character, while the light and shadow asymmetries avoid an overly rigid construction. The background has been reduced to a neutral surface in earthy, grayish and greenish tones, with no concrete spatial references. This economy of elements once again directs all attention to the face and reinforces the intimate and psychological character of the composition. The brushwork remains perceptible in numerous areas, particularly on the shirt, the collar, and the head modeling, imparting to the surface a vibration characteristic of expressionist figurativism. The result is a portrait of considerable personality, placed between realism and expressionism, where the interest in the individual identity of the subject combines with a subjective use of color and painterly matter. For its formal characteristics, the work can be cataloged within the Spanish expressionist school of the 20th century, within the tradition of the modern figurative portrait. The work is presented in a characteristic wavy-edged gold frame.
