- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. Hand-signed. - This extraordinary bouquet, created around 1860, constitutes a fascinating testimony to the cultural and aesthetic mestizaje promoted by the colony of French artists, scientists, and officials who accompanied the Second Empire of Maximilian I in Mexico. The composition, imbued with the academic rigor and technical sobriety of the nineteenth-century French still life, takes a deeply local and intimate turn by placing, alongside the floral delicacy of the vase, the unmistakable toasted and sugared silhouette of a traditional pan de muerto. This juxtaposition reveals the fascination that Mexican folklore, gastronomy, and funeral symbolism exerted on the enlightened gaze of the Gallic travelers, who found in the American soil an unprecedented botanical and devotional repertoire. Through a sober play of chiaroscuro and an exquisitely executed technique, the work transcends mere European naturalism to fix on the canvas that singular moment of cultural encounter: the delicate integration of the French academic artistic vision within the rich and poetic everyday Mexican imagination of the mid-19th century. - Image dimensions without frame: 25 x 36 cm / 39 x 49.5 cm with exclusive custom frame.
