École Néoclassique (c. 1800) - "Oh, malheureux Phaéton!"

- Oil on canvas. Original canvas. - Oh, unworthy Phaethon, an insolent youth whose blind ambition dared to take the reins of the same Sun. Behold the tragic beauty of this neoclassical canvas, where the severity of enlightened reason barely smothers the tragic heartbeat of rediscovered mythology: there stands the young charioteer, upright on the golden car, wrapped in a halo of solar radiance and escorted by the jinn of the ether. But that serene, almost statuesque posture is only the calm before the abyss, the fragile stillness that precedes catastrophe. A victim of bold inexperience and of that reckless obliviousness which only imprudent youth grants, Phaethon believed he possessed the strength to curb the frenetic gallop of the divine horses, ignoring that Helios’ fire requires the hand of a god and not the vain caprice of a mortal. The handsome insolent does not yet know that the reins he holds with pride today will tomorrow slip from his fingers, that the sky will blaze into chaos, and that his tragic fate — hurled into the abysses of the River Styx by Jupiter’s justly thunderous bolt — will be forever engraved as the highest and devouring lesson of human hubris. - Image dimensions without frame: 72 x 85 cm / 86 x 99 cm with exclusive custom frame. Thus, we guarantee that every work that leaves our gallery is a one‑of‑a‑kind piece in the world, with no replicas, and a testament to the innovation and passion of the artists we work with. Certain lots, due to their age and value, require an export permit issued by the Ministry of Culture. While it is an administrative procedure, it is indispensable to ensure the authenticity of the work and its free circulation internationally. Montbaron Gallery is committed to offering its clients original, unique, and unrepeatable artworks, guaranteeing the authenticity and quality of every piece in our collection. To ensure transparency and trust in every acquisition, we offer a digital Certificate of Guarantee, signed by a certified art historian. The Certificate of Guarantee includes full details about the piece, such as the author, creation date, technique used, and dimensions. The digital Certificate of Guarantee will be issued at the client’s request, providing an official reference for the acquired piece. This document will be sent in digital format and will be signed by an art historian from our gallery, ensuring its validity and backing. We are committed to the satisfaction and confidence of our clients, so any questions about authenticity or the condition of the work will be addressed professionally and diligently. To request your Certificate of Guarantee, please contact us through our usual channels.
