- Oil on oak panel. Exquisite technique that exploits the possibilities of the wooden support, pulling from the wood nacreous highlights and polished flesh tones with great effect. - The portrait of Zenaida Bonaparte, captured around 1840 in the crepuscular yet noble atmosphere of Rome, reveals the maturity of a woman whose life was a map of Napoleonic diaspora. Born in Paris in 1801 as the daughter of Joseph Bonaparte and Julie Clary, Zenaida embodied the transition from the imperial splendor of her childhood at Mortefontaine to European exile after the definitive fall of her uncle. In this effigy, probably painted by a brush of Daudian heritage — a school that had already immortalized her in youth during her stay in Brussels in 1821 — one perceives the dignity of someone who inhabited the Villa Bonaparte in Rome surrounded by masterpieces such as Bonaparte franchissant le Grand-Saint-Bernard, a direct legacy of her father. The composition underscores Zenaida’s role as the link binding the Bonaparte line after her marriage in 1822 to her cousin Charles-Lucien, a union aimed at preserving family cohesion and the heritage of the “princes in exile.” Flanked by her elder daughters, the princess not only presents herself as a Roman matron of late Neoclassical taste, but as a woman of vast culture who from childhood stood out in music and shared the intellectual life of her husband, the eminent naturalist. It is significant to remember that Zenaida’s name became permanently tied to science, for Charles-Lucien named in her honor a genus of doves, Zenaida, reflecting a symbiosis between artistic sensibility and scientific curiosity that marked her Roman home. Esthetically, the work exudes a formal rigor typical of the “second period” of David’s followers, where precise drawing and sculptural volume are softened by a warmer bourgeois sentimentality, typical of the Louis-Philippe era but applied to the Roman context. The painting captures the Zenaida who returned from her American stage at Point Breeze to settle permanently in Italy in 1827, under the gaze of the matriarch Letizia and Cardinal Fesch. In the gleam of the fabrics and the serenity of the faces of her daughters, the artist manages to capture the pride of a dynasty that, though deprived of thrones, kept intact its cultural prestige and its lineage in the salons of the Eternal City. - Image dimensions without frame: 51 x 65 cm / 80.5 x 66.5 cm with exclusive custom frame.
