Rare Victorian copy of Edgar Allan Poe's famous tales, published in London by the publishing house Ward and Lock at their historic address 158 Fleet Street. This paperback edition is distinguished by its chromolithographed cover (yellowback style), depicting a vivid scene from The Pit and the Pendulum. The interior is illustrated with thirty-eight authentic 19th-century wood engravings, including the illustration at the head of the tale The Gold-Beetle. The volume retains the publisher's original advertising catalogs at the beginning and at the end of the text block. A remarkable collectible for enthusiasts of Gothic literature and the history of 19th-century publishing. Well preserved considering its age and the fragility of period paper.
