EDGAR HODGES (1928-2025); four oils on board including a harbour scene with moored boats, one boat inscribed 'Emma Louise', signed and dated 2014, 40 x 51cm, unframed (4). Edgar Albert Hodges was an English artist who was the illustrator of the first two annuals of ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’, written by Reverend W. Awdry in 1979/80. Hodges was born in Bolton. He took his first art exam at the age of thirteen, passing easily due to an interest in drawing and painting from a very early age. He was involved in illustrating the first two annuals and the activity books of ‘Thomas the Tank Engine’ because of his interest in steam trains as he would go off into the countryside at any opportunity to photograph them. He reworked some of the illustrations from the Railway Series books for the activities, games, etc. In 1980, he left World Distributors, returned to Manchester and worked on other annuals such as ‘Dad’s Army’, ‘Postman Pat’, ‘The Wombles’ and ‘Doctor Who’. Sadly, Edgar died on February 13th, 2025, age 97 and the following items are from his estate. th, This lot may qualify for Artist Resale Rights.
