Edgard Farasyn (1858–1938) - Paarden met wagen in landelijk landschap

Atmospheric work by the Belgian painter Edgard Farasyn (1858–1938), an important representative of the Antwerp realist painting tradition. Farasyn found many of his subjects in daily life: workers, fishermen, farmers, landscapes and animals. He regularly worked outside Antwerp and between 1904 and 1910 also spent considerable time in Mol, where rural life and the Kempen landscape inspired him. In this painting two working horses are central, hitched to a wagon. The animals and the landscape are painted with a loose yet powerful brushwork in subdued earth tones, gray, green and reddish-brown. The creamy brushwork gives the work a great deal of texture and a strong sense of atmosphere. The subject fits particularly well within Farasyn’s documented interest in rural life and working animals. The current frame is functional; with a more fitting classical frame, the character of the work would probably be emphasized even better.
