The scene is the South of France — the Riviera or Marseille, where Édouard Collin spent the second half of his life. Collin (1906–1983), a pupil of Maurice Denis and Pierre Laurens and winner of the Grand Prix de Rome for painting in 1932, was a founder member of the Salon de Mai and one of the great French poster artists of the mid-century, designer of the famous posters for the liner ‘Liberté’ and the French Line.
