Title: Anglo-Indian Teak Writing/Occasional Table with Hand-Carved Naga Motifs – c. 1900 Description: A remarkable antique teak side table / étagère, made in the Anglo-Colonial style circa 1900. The piece is crafted from solid teak and combines a Western étagère form with rich, traditional Eastern hand-carved relief. The four openwork legs are intricately carved with stylized dragon/Naga figures and botanical motifs. The top surface features a recessed panel with a floral rim, and the lower surface also has a subtly incised floral decoration. The teak shows a beautiful, warm dark patina. Historical Function & Origin Around 1900, this type of table was used by British officials and colonists in Asia as an occasional table or tea table. They stood in reception rooms or on verandas to serve tea, place a book or pipe, or to present plants and precious items (such as Oriental porcelain). The lower shelf served to quickly put aside magazines, books, or extra tableware. Spirituality & Meaning of the Carving The carving on this furniture blends symbolism deeply rooted in Asian culture: The Naga / Mythical Beings (Feet): The openwork legs form stylized dragon or snake figures (Naga). In Hindu-Buddhist and Southeast Asian mythology, Nagas are guardians of water, fertility, and sacred spaces. They ward off negative energy and represent protection and prosperity in the interior. Lotus and Flower Motifs (Leaves): The carved flowers and vines on the top and bottom surfaces reference the lotus bloom and flowering vegetation. In Asian traditions, the lotus symbolizes purity, spiritual growth, and renewal, as it rises pristine from the mud. Interlaced Lines & Edges: The flowing meander borders symbolize the ceaseless flow of life and continual energy (Qi or Prana). Application in Contemporary Interior Design Because of the dark teak and pronounced handcrafted form, this small table is surprisingly versatile in modern living spaces: Japandi & Wabi-Sabi: Perfect fit due to appreciation for natural teak, craftsmanship, and well-worn patina. It creates a beautiful warm contrast with sleek concrete floors, linen, and neutral beige- or grey-toned palettes. Eclectic & Antique-Modern: As a focal piece (statement piece) next to a modern, streamlined sofa or design armchair. The furniture breaks hard lines in a room and adds history and texture. Classic / Global Living: Pairs excellently in an interior with abundant plants, botanical prints, brass accessories, and rich fabrics like velvet. Practical uses today: Can function as a refined side table next to an armchair, stylish plant stand, or as an accent table in a hall or niche with a reading lamp or object d’art on it. Specifications: Top dimensions: 53.5 x 42.5 cm Height: 64 cm Lower shelf: 33 x 20 cm (at 28 cm height from floor) Weight: 5.62 kg Material: Solid Teak (Teak) Origin: Anglo-Indian / Southeast Asia (imported from the UK) Period: ca. 1890–1920 Shipping: Due to its large size, it is sent as an XXL package.
