Egon Schiele - “Reclining Woman with Green Stockings

Egon Schiele: “Reclining Woman with Green Stockings, 1917”. Signed and dated in the plate. Authorized offset lithograph. Condition: the work is in excellent condition. Egon Schiele was an important figurative painter of the 20th century from Austria. He produced an abundance of vibrant paintings and drawings, the vast majority of which depict the naked female form. As a protegé of Gustav Klimt, Schiele became known for his raw, psychological intensity and bold portrayals of the human figure. His work broke with the ornamental sensuality of the Vienna Secession and introduced a radical honesty that explored vulnerability, sexuality, and the complexity of human emotions. Schiele's distinctive style is characterized by expressive linework, distorted anatomy, and a striking use of color and space. His portraits and nudes, often confrontational in their gaze and posture, reveal an unbridled exploration of desire and identity. The artist's ability to capture both physical tension and psychological depth sets him apart from his contemporaries and confirms him as a central figure in the transition from Symbolism to Expressionism. In 1917, the Austrian figurative artist Egon Schiele married Edith Harms, who became his principal muse. Schiele also produced 'Reclining Woman with Green Stockings', a portrait of Edith's younger sister Adele Harms. Today, Schiele's works are among the most sought-after on the art market. Original drawings and paintings regularly fetch prices of several millions of dollars at major auction houses. Paintings such as Houses with Colorful Laundry (1914) have brought in more than $40 million, while his expressive figure drawings are highly valued by collectors around the world.
