EGYPTIAN BRONZE FLASK WITH A BABOON FINIAL

Late Period, ca. 664 - 332 BC. A bronze flask with a broad compressed body tapering towards a narrow foot, rounded shoulders and a short cylindrical neck encircled by moulded rings. Above is a carefully modelled baboon head with radiating locks, surmounted by a large solar disc held within a curved support. The finial evokes the sacred baboon associated with Thoth and with the adoration of the rising sun, giving the otherwise restrained vessel an explicitly Egyptian religious character. The separately worked body and figural neck are covered by a dark brown surface with areas of green corrosion. Size: 220mm x 140mm; Weight: 340g Provenance: Private UK collection; previously part of an Oxfordshire ancient art collection; acquired from a Canadian collection formed prior to 2000. This item has been cleared against the Art Loss Register database and comes with a confirmation letter.
