All auctions / Silver & Gold / EGYPTIAN FAIENCE SCARAB WITH KHEPRI, PAPYRUS STEMS AND A SOLAR DISC

ew Kingdom, ca. 1550 - 1069 BC. > An oval scarab or scaraboid of pale glazed composition, later mounted on a silver wire hoop. The base bears a centrally placed scarab beetle beneath a solar disc and between paired vegetal stems, probably papyrus, with subsidiary protective devices. The beetle represents Khepri and the solar disc Re; the papyrus stems evoke vitality, growth and regeneration. A cautious sign-value summary is `ḫpr / Ḫprj` (the scarab, “becoming” or Khepri), `Rꜥ` (the solar disc, Re) and possibly `wꜣḏ` (papyrus/green flourishing). > For similar see: The Metropolitan Museum of Art, Object number 09.180.937. > Size: D:19.76mm / US: 10 / UK: T 1/2; Weight: 4.9g > Provenance: Private central London collection; previously acquired on the UK art market prior to 2000. > > >
