Egypt, Predynastic period. A white stone mace head of flattened spherical, or disc, form, mounted on a clear acrylic stand. A cylindrical shaft hole is drilled straight through the center to receive a wooden handle. The upper surface is smoothly polished, but over the centuries has developed granular encrustations. Maces served both as weapons and as symbols of authority, and the image of a ruler striking an enemy with a mace became one of the most enduring motifs in Egyptian royal art. Stone mace heads were shaped by grinding with abrasives, and the shaft hole was bored using a drill with sand as the abrasive. Item # 204404
