Elbano Méndez Osuna was a distinguished Venezuelan painter, watercolourist, and illustrator born in Tovar (Mérida State) in 1918 and who died in 1973. Considered one of the most singular and technically gifted figures of Venezuelan figurative painting of the mid-20th century, his work moves between genre scenes, social realism, and a strong influence from European postmodern avant-gardes. Formation and International Trajectory His solid artistic education developed in prestigious institutions in the Americas and Europe: • Caracas: He began his studies at the School of Plastic Arts and Applied Arts (1936-1939). • Chile: He continued at the School of Applied Arts of the University of Chile, funded by the Venezuelan State. During his stay in 1942, he worked as a direct assistant to Mexican muralists David Alfaro Siqueiros and Xavier Guerrero in the iconic murals of the Agrupación Escolar México in Chillán. • Madrid: He expanded his graphic studies at the National School of Graphic Arts. • Paris (Key Period - 1955): He moved to the French capital, where he joined the famous La Grande Chaumière Academy and the prestigious workshop of the cubist master and theorist André Lhote. In this fruitful European period he consolidated his mastery in portraiture and the melancholic chromatic atmosphere. He won the first prize at the Summer Salon in Paris. Throughout his career he was recognized in multiple official competitions: • Honour Mention, I University Salon, Santiago de Chile (1941). • José Loreto Arismendi Prize, IV Official Salon of Venezuelan Art (1943). • Honour Mention, I Arturo Michelena Salon (1943). • Lions Club Prize, IV Arturo Michelena Salon (1946). • Second Official Painting Prize, VIII Official Salon of Venezuelan Art Exceptional period piece by one of the great masters of Venezuelan modernity, Elbano Méndez Osuna (1918–1973). This magnificent oil painting is a museum piece from his acclaimed Paris period (1955), a key period in which the artist moved to France to study under the tutelage of the celebrated cubist master André Lhote. Unlike his usual and well-known Andean landscapes, this work represents an extraordinary rarity in his production: a superb figurative portrait with an existentialist edge from the mid-century, heavily influenced by the aesthetics of the School of Paris. The work stands out for its geometric composition and a melancholic atmosphere rich in narrative, capturing a thoughtful woman beside a bar with a bottle. An unrepeatable opportunity for Latin American avant-garde collectors and collectors specialized in Venezuelan art of the 20th century. Signed and dated “Paris 1955” in the artist’s own handwriting in the upper right quadrant.
