Black pearls exert a special allure due to their unusual coloration and metallic luster. However, when it comes to pearls, “black” rarely refers to a completely uniform shade. The spectrum ranges from anthracite and silver-gray to deep shades of blue, green, and violet that shift depending on the angle of the light. It is precisely this interplay between the base color and the colored overtones that gives dark pearls their characteristic depth. This elegant necklace consists of carefully coordinated Akoya cultured pearls ranging in color from deep gray to black. Akoya pearls are prized for their generally uniform shape and, in particular, their clear, intense luster. Our pearls have acquired their characteristic dark hue through a finishing process using silver salts. In this process, finely dispersed silver is deposited within the layers of mother-of-pearl, creating nuanced shades of gray and black. The natural luster of the mother-of-pearl is preserved and takes on a cool, sometimes almost metallic effect. Of course, the colour of the pearls is permanent and does not bleed. The luster of our individually knotted pearls brings out silvery, bluish, pink, and sometimes greenish reflections, giving the pearls a wonderful appearance. An oval white gold clasp featuring another pearl and two small diamonds complements the cool color palette of the necklace. Measuring 91 cm in length, this is what is known as an “opera necklace,” which can also be worn doubled around the neck and is particularly suitable for festive occasions. Created around 1985, the necklace is in very good condition and came to us here in Berlin.
