The master work of Emer de Vattel (1714–1767), regarded as one of the most influential authors in the history of the Law of Nations and International Law, includes a preface in which he justifies his project and specifies the legal perspective he intends to follow, and preliminaries that recount the general ideas of the Law of Nations. The first volume is divided into 2 books: the first concerns the characteristics of the nation, the second is devoted to external relations.
