Emile-Henry Tilmans (1888-1960) - Peinture orientaliste «...

Oil painting on isorel panel, signed, countersigned, titled and dated 1954 on the reverse, Large format: 70 cm x 63 cm Private collection, in good condition. Painting exhibited at the Paris Winter Salon of 1956 (label on the back of the painting with reference S H 1956) An orientalist work highly representative of the colonial vision of the mid-20th century. The landscape is structured by the palm trees that unfold their trunks and fronds toward the background. It is animated in the foreground by the typical scene of water carriers with their bright red-orange jars. In the rear, the traditional houses of southern Tunisia impose the bright white of their lime walls. The late-afternoon light radiates across the whole scene. The vivid colors, contrasts, the depth of the composition, and the elevation brought by the palm trees immerse the viewer in the oriental universe and atmosphere of southern Tunisia, with a humane look at the daily life that populates it. Émile-Henry Tilmans is a Belgian painter, draftsman, and etcher born in Leuven in 1888. He lived in Brussels and then at 42bis, rue d'Elbeuf in Rouen, where he died in 1960. He first became known in Belgium under his birth name, Émile-Henry Tielemans, before adopting in France this second signature “Tilmans.” In Belgium (under the name Tielmans) he was successively a pupil at the Académie des beaux-arts de Leuven and at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts of Brussels. In Brussels, he frequented a Symbolist circle “La Guirlande,” exhibiting in this spirit nudes, figures, and oriental-inspired subjects drawn from The Thousand and One Nights. In France (under the name TILMANS) he began in 1916 his relations with Rouen by participating in the exhibition of Belgian and Norman painters at the Musée des beaux-arts. In 1940, the artist, who would henceforth use the name Émile-Henry Tilmans, settled permanently in Rouen where World War II would inspire social-themed engravings. His works are exhibited every year at the Paris Winter Salon and are held in the Musée des beaux-arts de Rouen, by various public institutions of Paris and Belgian museums. A portion of his œuvre is inspired by Tunisia, where he stayed in the mid-1950s. TILMANS is referenced in official dictionaries (Bénézit, Delarge…) Detailed biography on Wikipedia. Careful, fast, and trackable shipping.
