This copy is notable both for its rarity as a 1683 theological-political treatise and for its direct connection to a prominent English bishop, Simon Patrick, a leading figure in the post-Restoration Church of England. With a library stamp A later 17th-century printing issued in Cologne (Coloniae) by Bernardus Hetsingh in 1683. First written by the French theologian Edmond Richer (Emundi Richerii) in 1611, this work is a foundational text of Gallicanism and conciliar theory. It argues for the independence of the secular state from papal authority and advocates for a more democratic or representative governance structure within the Catholic Church (placing authority in church councils rather than solely in the Papacy).
