This narrow, elongated enamel doorpost sign originates from Japan and indicated the residence of a 'Chōkaichō' (町会長), the chairman of a local neighborhood association (chōkai), a role comparable to a local representative. At the top of the sign is a yellow-and-white stylized coat-of-arms with a star, possibly a municipal or association logo. The text is rendered in white letters on a deep blue background, with mounting holes at the top and bottom, intended for mounting beside a doorpost. The condition is generally good, with clear and legible lettering and a strong gloss on the enamel surface. There are only a few small stains visible, appropriate to the age of the sign. This authentic Japanese doorpost sign is a special and informative object for enthusiasts of Asian enamel signs and collectors of administrative or societal memorabilia. The sign tells a piece of history of the traditional Japanese neighborhood organization and forms a atmospheric addition to any collection. Shipping from the Netherlands.
