Engelmann (Godefroy) Recueil d'Essais Lithographiques..., 8 lithographed

Engelmann (Godefroy) Recueil d'Essais Lithographiques dans les differents genres de dessin tels que manière de Crayon, de la plume, du pinceau et de Lavis..., first edition, lithographed throughout with title (vignette depicting two sides of medallion), list of plates and 8 plates, two with colour, light soiling to title and some margins, stitched in later blue wrappers, uncut, preserved in modern cloth portfolio with ties, gilt-stamped morocco label to upper cover, Paris, chez l'Auteur, [1816]. *** One of the great rarities of lithography and one of the first lithographic albums to be published in France. Engelmann (1788-1839), a native of Mulhouse, first learned of lithography in 1813 and began to experiment on stones. Having studied the process in Munich he then travelled to Paris and established a printing house. His press soon surpassed that of his rival Lasteyrie and became one of the most advanced in Europe. "More than anyone else in Europe it was Englemann who, by virtue of his technical improvements, clear descriptions, and skilful printing, encouraged artists to draw on stone; and the real growth of lithography as far as the artist was concerned really dates from the establishment of his press in Paris." Twyman, Lithography 1800-1850, pp.52-55. The plates and drawing styles include a pencil portrait after Girodet and a lancer after Horace Vernet, a pen study of a dragoon after Mongin, a pen-drawn map, an imitation wood-engraving, and tinted lithography.
