An unusual and finely carved figurative ornament, probably originating from Sumbawa Island in Eastern Indonesia. The object depicts a seated human figure wearing an impressive three-pointed crown, possibly representing an ancestor, a person of high status or a mythological being. The face is remarkably expressive, with large circular eyes, a prominent straight nose and a small mouth. The crown is decorated with concentric circular motifs, while a beautifully engraved crosshatched band surrounds the forehead. Similar circular decorations appear around the base of the figure, creating a distinctive ornamental design. The elongated body is highly stylized, with the arms resting alongside the legs. The carving displays considerable attention to detail, particularly in the facial features and the carefully incised geometric patterns. The figure appears to be carved from bone, although the exact material has not been established. Its warm creamy colour, natural patina and darker areas of wear emphasize the finely carved details. The precise age and original function remain uncertain. The object may have served as a ceremonial ornament or a symbolic representation of an ancestral figure. An intriguing example of traditional Indonesian craftsmanship, tentatively attributed to Sumbawa Island in the Lesser Sunda Islands. Its unusual appearance, intricate decoration and expressive character make it an attractive addition to a collection of Indonesian tribal art.
