He settled in Madrid in 1869, where he studied at the School of Fine Arts. He regularly frequented the Prado Museum during his studies and trained by copying classical works. Very passionate about technique, it is said that in 1877 he presented to the Academy a new painting method that did not use oil or varnish. It was in 1880 that he settled in Paris.
