Erich Mercker (1891-1973) - Hafenszene

Erich Mercker 1891 - 1973 Munich was a landscape, industrial, and cityscape painter. As one of the most important industrial painters of the 20th century, Mercker left behind an extensive body of work consisting of an estimated over 3,000 oil paintings. Today, his paintings are sought-after items at first-class auction houses worldwide, for example in Vienna or London. The painting comes from a family ownership in Munich 102 cm x 82 cm Oil on cardboard Typical subject: Over the course of his career, Erich Mercker painted numerous views of the Hamburg harbor as well as the Elbe. The silhouette in the background with its distinctive church spires strongly recalls the Hamburg cityscape with its characteristic copper roofs and church towers (such as St. Nikolai, St. Katharinen, or St. Michaelis). In the front left there is a typical North German lighter or cargo ship with brown rigging, as was common on the Unterelbe and in the Hamburg harbor.
