All auctions / Furniture, Design & Mirrors / Ernest Gimson (1864-1919), a rare inlaid walnut stationery box

inlaid with stylised foliate designs in mother-of-pearl and abalone shell, the hinged lid opening to reveal divided compartments within, exposed dovetails to corners, raised on a moulded foot 18 x 29 x 18.5cm, For a photograph of a similar box, see the De Montfort University Archive Catalogue, reference DPA/A/01/F/024, De Montfort University Archive Catalogue, reference, DPA/A/01/F/024, Catherine Powell, daughter of Alfred and Louise Powell, thence by descent within the Powell family, Ernest Gimson’s stationery boxes are deceptively simple objects. Their restrained form leaves little to distract from the quality of their making, with precisely executed dovetail joints and delicate inlay in mother-of-pearl demonstrating the exceptional craftsmanship behind them. In this sense, they are particularly good examples of Gimson’s wider brilliance - a belief that beauty could be found in honest materials, sound construction and the sympathetic resolution of even the smallest detail. Modest in scale but remarkable in execution, these boxes distil the combination of practicality, refinement and craftsmanship that defines Gimson’s work. Please register to request a condition report
