Escuela Española (Siglos XVIII - XIX) - Sculpture

Ivory Infant Jesus of the Passion. Spanish school (late 18th century – 19th century). Late Baroque Devotional sculpture of the Infant Jesus of the Passion made in carved ivory and partially polychromed, conceived as an articulated 'dressable' figure. It is accompanied by an independent carved and gilded wooden plinth, decorated with scrolls and volutes in Rococo taste. Iconographically it depicts the Infant Jesus of the Passion, shown above a skull, symbol of death conquered by Christ and traditionally associated with Adam within Christian iconography. One of the arms is posed in a blessing gesture. The figure features soft, rounded childlike volumes, with a polished finish and uniform patina. The face is carefully modeled and partially polychromed, with almond-shaped eyes, eyelids defined by incision and marking of the iris and pupil. The hair combines carving and dark polychromy, with wavy locks worked in relief. This type of image was made to be dressed in textile garments and was intended for private devotion, in home oratories or altars. The holes for anchorage to a base are preserved on the soles of the feet. School: Spanish Baroque Material: elephant ivory and polychromed wood Period: Late 18th century – 19th century Style: Late Baroque and Rococo plinth Dimensions: 25 cm with plinth; 18 cm without Total weight: 450 g It presents faults in the fingers of the blessing hand, with the loss of one of them, and damage to the rear of the skull.
