A Great Antebellum Rarity from Alabama Eufaula, Alabama. Eastern Bank of Alabama. 1859 $50. PCGS Currency Very Fine 25. Offered here is a distinct rarity from East Alabama dating to the late 1850s. Issued by the Eufaula-based Eastern Bank of Alabama, bidders may observe a vignette of what appears to be a stately plantation at center, but this composition is actually the Union Female College out of Eufaula which opened in 1854 and again reopened roughly a year after the Civil War ended in 1866 before ultimately closing for the final time in 1903. This composition is notably encircled by the bank title seen in the top margin and "FIFTY DOLLARS" underprinted beneath the primary vignette which arches inwards. The subsidiary vignette entitled Union seen at left opposite an unidentified female allegorical figure at right offers what appears to be a noted political statement as "UNION" is completely obliviated from the pillar and this apparent statement can be seen on other survivors of this denomination on the Eastern Bank. In all, this is not only a rare note, but also a great opportunity for the specialist of numismatic material from Alabama. Estimate: $1,500 - $2,500. Provenance: From the Caine Collection. Whitman Plate Note.
