Europe - Europe

A particularly fine and historically interesting copper engraving by the Franco-Dutch cartographer Henri Abraham Chatelain, produced around 1708 and published in Amsterdam. The map is from Chatelain's famous seven-volume Atlas Historique, which appeared between 1705 and 1720. This atlas was innovative for its time in that maps were combined with extensive historical, geographical, chronological, and ethnographic information. Antiquarius Center stage on the sheet is a map of the then-known Old World, with Europe, Asia, and a large part of Africa. Surrounding the map are numerous French-language texts, chronological overviews, and tables. These cover, among other things, the history and succession of rulers of the Assyrian, Persian, Egyptian, and Chinese kingdoms, making the sheet not only a geographical map but also an extensive historical and chronological study.
