European school (XIX) - Vanitas -Memento Mori

Collection of memento mori/vanitas oil on panels The collection comprises 4 painted panels depicting the four seasons (subject very rare). They are accompanied by a guilloché frame with ebonized wood and inserts in tortoiseshell material (probably galalith). The memento mori is a late medieval iconographic theme in which the motif of death is depicted. Linked to the broader iconography of the "Triumph of Death"—a macabre iconographic theme spread in the late Middle Ages from the 14th century, especially in the Franco-German area and in the Alpine region, continuing beyond the Renaissance. The work measures 57x57 cm while the panels are about 15x15 cm. P.S.
