DESCRIPTION Interesting religious painting on glass depicting Saint Peter the Apostle, one of the fundamental figures of Christian iconography. The saint is shown half-length, depicted as an elderly man with gray hair and beard, dressed in a blue tunic and a broad ochre yellow mantle. He holds two large keys between his hands, one dark and one light, traditional attributes of Saint Peter and symbols of the spiritual authority he, according to the Gospel of Matthew, received from Jesus. His face, slightly turned to the right, exhibits a serene and thoughtful expression, while a delicate circular halo surrounds his head. The simplicity of the composition and the luminosity of the colors confer a particularly approachable and devotional character to the image. 3. STYLISTIC, COMPOSITIONAL AND EXPRESSIVE ANALYSIS The work responds to a sensibility typical of European popular religious painting, characterized by a direct and expressive interpretation of traditional iconographic models. What stand out are the simplification of facial features, the delicate blush on the cheeks, and the use of broad color surfaces in blues, yellows, and earthy tones. The drawing preserves a particular spontaneity, especially visible in the hands, the beard, and the drapery folds. Far from academic naturalism, the painting seeks to convey a recognizable, friendly, and spiritually intimate image for the viewer, qualities characteristic of many manifestations of popular devotional art. 4. SIGNATURE, SCHOOL AND ARTISTIC CONTEXT No signature is visible that would identify the author. The painting stylistically belongs to the European tradition of popular religious imagery, especially widespread during the 18th and 19th centuries. The representation of Saint Peter with the Keys of Heaven constitutes iconography with a long tradition, present in great works of the Renaissance and Baroque. Artists such as José de Ribera and Francisco Herrera el Mozo cultivated the depiction of the apostle, helping to consolidate an image recognizable by its attributes and physical characteristics. These references allow historical contextualization of the iconography, without establishing direct authorship relationships with the present painting. Regarding technique, religious paintings made on the back of glass achieved particular diffusion in various regions of Central Europe, especially Bavaria, Bohemia, and Austria, though there were also local traditions in other European territories. The concrete chronology remains open, since the continuity of Baroque models in popular art makes it difficult to determine a date solely by stylistic criteria. 5. OTHER INTERESTING INFORMATION The painting on glass constitutes a particularly interesting artistic manifestation within European decorative and devotional arts. In its reverse-painting mode, known in German as Hinterglasmalerei, the artist first renders the details and highlights to apply the background colors afterward, reversing the usual order of painting on canvas or panel. This technique yields a particular luminosity and chromatic depth thanks to the glass surface. During the 18th and 19th centuries, these images gained great popularity in domestic and religious settings, forming part of small prayer and private devotion spaces. The present work shares provenance with the previously cataloged Allegory of Abundance, although there is no documentation to determine whether both paintings were produced in the same workshop or period. It is presented in a sober dark wooden frame, whose simplicity suitably accompanies the traditional character of the representation. A piece of attractive iconographic and decorative value, testimony to a form of artistic expression that brought religious images closer to everyday life for generations. 6. SHIPPING AND CONDITIONS The work will be packed by a professional specialized company in a custom-made box with foam protections suited to the fragility of the glass. We ship worldwide. Distant destinations or countries outside the European Union may incur additional costs, which will be communicated according to applicable conditions and rates. The frame is considered a decorative complement, without prejudice to the rights of the buyer. The photographs form an integral part of the description and allow a detailed assessment of the conservation state of the work.
