Virgin with the Child (Iconography of Our Lady of Refuge / Mariahilf) Oil on canvas Period / School: 18th - 19th century (Colonial / European School) Condition: Good (with normal signs of age and craquelure typical of the period) Canvas dimensions: 68.5 x 54 cm Frame included: Yes, period gilded and carved frame. Beautiful oil painting on canvas of medium format that represents one of the most famous and emotionally moving Marian iconographies in the history of Christian art: the Virgin with the Child, following the celebrated original model (Mariahilf) created in the 16th century by the German Renaissance master Lucas Cranach the Elder. In the Hispanic and colonial realm (Viceroyalty of New Spain), this representation was greatly revered and spread under the invocation of Our Lady of the Refuge of Sinners or Virgin of Help. Iconographic and stylistic details: Composition: The Virgin lovingly holds the Child Jesus in her lap against a dark (tenebrist) background, a technique widely used to emphasize the divinity and the three-dimensionality of the figures. Characteristic gesture: The tender and intimate gesture of the Infant Jesus is highlighted, as he shyly brings his left hand to touch his Mother's chin, an unmistakable feature of this devotion. Both figures wear detailed gold crowns of royal typology. Pictorial quality: Excellent handling of flesh tones (faces and the Child’s skin) with soft hues and pink cheeks, as well as a great mastery of the folds of the blue mantle and the pink tunic of the Virgin. Frame: The piece is magnificently framed in an era-appropriate, richly carved and gilded border, with geometric and rope motifs that greatly enhance the aesthetic and commercial value of the whole. A devotional piece of great presence, ideal for both collectors of sacred art and old master painting and for high-decoration projects. Colonial / Hispano-Nevoytian or Western School (Follower / Copy of Lucas Cranach the Elder) Religious painting of excellent workmanship executed in oil on canvas of a devotional medium format. The work faithfully reproduces one of the most influential, beloved and widely disseminated iconographic models of Western Christian art: the Virgin of Help (Mariahilf-Bild), whose original was conceived by the German Renaissance painter Lucas Cranach the Elder (after 1537). Iconographic analysis: The painting stands out for capturing a scene of deep domestic intimacy endowed with intense theological symbolism. Breaking with medieval hieraticism, the naked Infant Jesus embraces his mother's neck with affectionate warmth, adopting an unmistakable and characteristic gesture: placing the fingers of his left hand on the Virgin’s chin. Both figures are outlined against a dark or tenebrist background that enhances the three-dimensionality and delicacy of the flesh tones. They are crowned with complex golden royal diadems, traditionally added in devotional variants to emphasize their Queen of Heaven status. Root in Colonial / Hispano: From the 18th century, this European print was assimilated with great success by the viceroyal workshops in America (especially New Spain), where Jesuit and Franciscan missionaries renamed it under the invocation of Our Lady of the Refuge of Sinners. This work perfectly answers those devotional commissions, where the cobalt blue mantle and the Virgin’s pink tunic combined with sumptuous carved frames for private shrines. The Colonial Parallel: Miguel Cabrera (1757) and José de Páez (18th century). Great viceroyal masters who established this identical compositional design (oval flesh-toned faces, flat mantles and neutral backgrounds) in the most important American collections, today housed in venues such as the Museo Soumaya (Mexico City) or the Regional Museum of Guadalupe (Zacatecas).
