European School (XX), signed Wilhelmson - Bohuslän - Interieurgemälde

Bohuslän Interior Painting (Carl Wilhelmson / Circle) Title / Theme: Interior scene with fisherman/coast dwellers in backlight at the table Object Description: Technique & Medium: Oil painting on unvarnished canvas Signature: At the bottom left signed (surname “Wilhelmson” clearly legible; the prefixed initials in close-up read as “CJ” or “GJ”) Back / Provenance traces: Unpainted canvas with clear chalk/pencil markings “HR” (likely a collector’s mark, inventory number or an earlier auction entry) Dimensions: Visible canvas size: approx. 65 × 54 cm Overall size with frame: approx. 74 × 63 cm Framing: Plain original frame made of softwood Condition: Authentic original condition Art Historical Classification & Description: The work shows a moody interior scene in a traditional Bohuslän cottage: An older man or fisherman sits in backlight before a window at a wooden table. On the table are a coffee pot, a cup with saucer, and a wooden bowl on a crocheted coaster. The painting displays overwhelming stylistic, thematic, and technical parallels to the main body of work of the renowned Swedish artist Carl Wilhelmson (1866–1928), particularly to his iconic period of work in Bohuslän and Fiskebäckskil between 1895 and 1905: Light treatment: Dramatic backlighting with the figure’s sun-lit, vividly red ears and a nuanced color palette in the shadowed foreground. Ductus & Texture: Rich brushwork with thick impasto on the windowsill, cup and light reflections, transitioning to thinner, broader color applications in the shadow areas. Signature Feature: The surname “Wilhelmson” is clearly defined. The prefixed initials leave room for interpretation: it could be an original Wilhelmson work with later signature overpaint/retouch, an extraordinary work by a direct student/contemporary from the Valand Academy in Gothenburg, or a previously undiscovered early variant. An exceedingly expressive and atmospheric work of Nordic painting from the turn of the century for collectors of Nordic art.
