This painting is a Romantic-style portrait with a strong influence from Spanish painting of the 18th- to 19th-century period, specifically in the Goya orbit. Here is why: Stylistic features Composition and background: the figure emerges from a dark, greenish and almost abstract background, with no environmental details. This device concentrates all attention on the face and on the clothing, and is very characteristic of portraits from Goya's era. Loose and impasto brushwork: especially on the mantilla and the lace, where the painter uses touches of white, blue and pale green applied quickly, suggesting the texture of the fabric rather than drawing it in detail. It is a technique close to avant la lettre Impressionism that is already visible in late Goya. Palette: cool tones (dark greens, pale blues, whites) contrasted with the golden ocher of the skirt and the warm tone of the skin. The light falls on the face and shoulder, with a soft chiaroscuro. Costume: the lace mantilla over the head and shoulders, together with the long gloves, recall the Spanish fashion of the late 18th and early 19th centuries (the world of the "majas" and the ladies of the time). Model's attitude: a sidelong gaze, slightly evasive, with a certain melancholy or reserve. It is a subtle psychology typical of Romanticism.
