Exceptional natural Sri Lankan rough crystal, remarkable for its intense orange-reddish color, its transparency, and its spectacular shine Beautiful natural rough sapphire from Sri Lanka (Ceylon) This piece immediately catches the eye with an intensely bright orange color, enriched with red-orange and scarlet nuances depending on orientation and lighting. Its strong saturation, combined with areas of good transparency, produces a spectacular visual rendering: light passes through certain parts of the crystal while the many natural reliefs reflect it as extremely bright flashes. Kept in its rough state, this specimen reveals the full complexity of its natural growth and constitutes a very fine piece for a collection devoted to corundums, rough gemstones, and minerals of Sri Lanka. A color orange of remarkable intensity The dominant feature of this crystal is undeniably its color. Under direct light, the stone develops an extremely saturated orange hue, evolving in places toward much deeper red-orange tones. The most transparent areas become particularly bright and almost give the impression that the crystal is lit from within. This non-uniform color distribution creates a remarkable depth. The edges may appear lighter and more flamboyant, while some central zones take on deeper tones, giving the specimen a rich and dynamic appearance. This is a stone whose appearance can change considerably with the direction of the light, making it particularly interesting to observe by hand or under magnification. Transparency and brilliance The crystal presents a charming combination of transparent to translucent areas, accompanied by many natural surfaces that are highly reflective. Its vitreous luster is especially visible on the reliefs and small fracture surfaces. Under a pinpoint light source, these generate a multitude of white and silver reflections that strongly contrast with the orange-red background of the stone. The outer, most transparent zones let light penetrate deeply and reveal the internal architecture of the crystal. This combination of highly saturated color, transparency, and brilliance gives the specimen a remarkable presence despite its millimeter-scale dimensions. A particularly rich natural surface The interest of this piece also lies in its rough state. Its surface features a multitude of reliefs, irregularities, textures, and natural structures, creating under magnification a true mineralogical landscape. Some parts are relatively smooth and vitreous, while others show a much more complex texture. These characteristics attest to the crystal’s natural history and make every viewing angle different. Unlike a faceted stone, whose geometry is determined by human intervention, this specimen preserves its mineral character and all the individuality of its morphology. Specimen characteristics Mineral: Natural corundum – Sapphire Origin: Sri Lanka (Ceylon) Weight: 0.40 carat Dimensions: 4 × 3.4 × 2.5 mm Dominant color: Intense orange Nuances: Glowing orange-red to orange-red depending on lighting Transparency: Transparent to translucent depending on areas Luster: Vitreous and bright Shape: Natural rough crystal State: Unfaceted Quality: Gem quality Piece type: Natural gem for collection Ceylon: an emblematic provenance for gemstones Sri Lanka, historically known as Ceylon, has a gemology tradition dating back to antiquity and ranks among the world’s most famous sources for corundums. The interest of this specimen lies precisely in the combination of a historic provenance with an unusually vivid chromatic expression. Presented in its rough form, it also allows appreciating the corundum before any lapidary work: color, transparency, internal structures, and morphology remain directly observable. A piece for the collector With its 0.40 carat, its strongly saturated orange color, and its remarkable behavior under light, this crystal makes a particularly aesthetic piece. It will naturally find its place in a collection dedicated to natural sapphires, Ceylon corundums, colored rough gems, or gem minerals. It is also exceptionally suitable for observation with a loupe or macrophotography, which reveals the full richness of its internal and surface structures. High-magnification photography greatly highlights this architecture: under light, the crystal seems to alternate between incandescent orange, orange-red, and scarlet flashes, while its natural surfaces produce a multitude of brilliant reflections. A superb natural rough sapphire from Ceylon, remarkable for its intensely saturated orange color, its luster, and its transparency, offering a particularly appealing combination for the natural gem collector.
