Exemplar with extraordinary chromatic contrasts and intense blue fluorescence — This lot features a notably large specimen of Blue Amber, one of the most fascinating and sought-after varieties of fossil resin, coming from the ancient forests of Sumatra, Indonesia. Its peculiarity lies in a spectacular optical property: when observed under normal lighting, the sample presents a dark, deep, almost enigmatic tone, but when exposed to a UV light source or backlit, it reveals a surprising chromatic soul, transforming into an object of vibrant beauty. Its organic shape and polished surface highlight every nuance, making it a collectible piece and a display item with strong visual impact. With considerable weight and a free, sculptural form, this piece preserves the essence of the original resin nodules, expertly polished to reveal its inner beauty. The surface is smooth and glossy, with a vitreous luster that invites touch and observation. In reflected light, the dominant color is a very dark cherry brown, almost black, which houses within it an universe of natural inclusions and complex textures, testimonies of its prehistoric past. A part of the specimen shows traces of the original external crust, a detail that enhances its authenticity and tells its geological story. The real spectacle appears when the specimen is illuminated correctly. Under ultraviolet light, a wide portion of its surface ignites with an incredible electric blue fluorescence. This phenomenon is not a pigment, but a quantum effect due to the presence of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons within the resin, which absorb UV light and re-emit it at a lower visible wavelength. In transmitted light, however, the edges and the thinner sections of the sample flare with warm tones, ranging from golden yellow to fiery red, creating a breathtaking contrast with the ethereal blue of the fluorescence. Sumatra Amber formed about 20-23 million years ago, during the Miocene. It is fossilized resin from trees belonging to the legume family, specifically the extinct species Hymenaea protera. Each piece of this amber is a time capsule, a fragment of a vanished ecosystem, trapped and preserved for millennia beneath the soil of tropical forests. Possessing a specimen of such size and quality means safeguarding a tangible testament to the deep history of our planet. For its unique characteristics, this Blue Amber specimen qualifies as a piece of great interest both for the collector of rare minerals and for the natural history enthusiast. Its generous dimensions and color duality make it a sculptural object of exceptional value, perfect for display in a modern Wunderkammer, in a professional studio, in a library, or as a focal point of refined interior design. It is a piece that not only decorates but tells a story, stimulates curiosity, and invites contemplation of natural wonder.
