EXCEPTIONALLY RARE KWÉLÉ MASK (Pibibuzé-type or...

KWÉLÉ MASK (pibibuzé or zoomorphic type) GABON / REPUBLIC OF THE CONGO HEIGHT: 85.5 cm WIDTH: 22 cm THICKNESS: 17 cm Sculpted wood, buffalo skin, pigments, patina of use Kwélé masks are among the most refined expressions of ritual art in equatorial Africa. Closely associated with the Bwété cult, an initiatory system borrowed from neighboring Kota populations, they form part of a complex set of practices aimed at preserving the village’s spiritual and social balance. At the heart of this apparatus lies the bwété, a reliquary basket containing the bones of the ancestors, regarded as the receptacle of protective invisible forces. The masks, hung in the houses outside of ceremonies, thus assume an apotropaic function, meant to ward off harmful influences and to activate the beneficial powers linked to the ancestors. Anthropomorphic specimens, designated by the term pibibuzé (“man”), are distinguished by a pared-down stylization and a striking frontal gaze. Meanwhile, the zoomorphic masks — antelope, warthog, or gorilla — develop a formal vocabulary of great modernity, characterized by geometric volumes and clean lines, today particularly sought after for their plastic vitality. Beyond their aesthetic quality, these masks are embedded in a precise ritual context tied to the cohesion of the kin groups within the village. In a social organization based on competition among family heads, the Bwété cult played an essential regulatory role, ensuring balance between authority, mediation, and collective harmony. The ceremonies, which could last several days, began with a ritual hunt in the forest. While the men moved away, antelope masks appeared in the village, energizing songs and dances addressed to women and children. These manifestations contributed to the transmission of values, the reinforcement of social bonds, and the activation of spiritual forces.
