This gold and platinum ring lives from the contrast of light and shadow, of bright white and dark blue. Sparkling diamonds form a lace-like frame in which blue sapphires and a large old-cut diamond are set. A total of 19 old-cut diamonds weighing around 1.75 ct adorn the entire surface of the ring. The ring face is also structured with fine millegrains and effective openings so that it does not appear heavy despite its imposing size. The sapphires are not heated or treated in any other way and weigh a further carat. Together with the bright white of the platinum and the diamonds, this creates a wonderful contrast. The ring was created around 1910 and the light, ethereal workmanship with airy openings and the beautiful two-tone contrast is typical of this period. A beautiful overview of the contemporary variety can be found in historical jewelry catalogs, e.g. the wonderful, color-illustrated catalog of the jeweller E. Bansse from Paris. You can find it at this link. What might a mondaine of the Belle Époque, the last golden years before the First World War, have worn this ring for? With Madame Paquin's midnight blue dress or with the Callot Soeurs' design interwoven with silver lamé? Today we can only speculate, because like almost all pieces of jewelry, this ring came to us without any information about its provenance. What is certain, however, is that it belonged to a wealthy lady who wanted to make a grand entrance. This beautiful ring is strikingly large and also has precious features. This elegant jewel, which has lost none of its beauty even after a century, came to us here in Berlin. It comes with a detailed appraisal.
